INFERTILITY & TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE

Traditional Chinese Medicine has been used to treat both female infertility and male sub fertility conditions in China for more than three thousand years. With cultural and social emphasis on family, Traditional Chinese Medicine doctors developed a very good system to treat infertility with success. We know this and we still use this widely in China. Currently there are several hundred Chinese herbs identified and used extensively in infertility treatments along with acupuncture, moxabustion, dietary and other therapies.

In our clinic we use these modalities to treat the root cause of infertility, and focus on treating your whole being (mind, body, and spirit). You will not only experience an improvement in your specific condition but also achieve greater overall health and well being.

Trying to conceive can be the most exciting time of your life, but it can also be the most difficult. You are both emotionally and physically stressed, and we understand the strains of infertility. We provide a personal and caring relationship for every one of our patients because we believe that caring and nurturing are just as important to your success in overcoming infertility as any other western methods.

As specialist in the treatment of reproductive enhancement, we recognize that every person and couple having difficulty conceiving need individualized treatment because no two people present with the exact same issues. With that customized approach, Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment can be an effective means to aid conception in man and women in many cases of infertility– endometriosis, ovulation problems, poor ovarian reserve, poor egg quality, luteal phase defect, thin endometrium, irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, PCOS, unexplained infertility, advanced maternal age, male factor, such as low sperm count, poor morphology, poor motility, and immunological pathologies.

The process usually begins with an initial evaluation. Treatments are rendered on the same visit after the evaluation. Objectives and goals are established in the first visit. Depending on the cause and the severity of the condition, treatment course consists of acupuncture treatment, herbal therapy and diet plan.

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is a therapy of inserting, manipulating, and retaining very fine needles in specific points of the body to solicit neurological, immunological, and endocrine responses. In reproductive medicine, acupuncture affects the central nervous system to regulate the pituitary and the hormonal system. Acupuncture also promotes circulation of blood and energy throughout your body, especially to the reproductive organs (ovaries, uterus, testicles), which is extremely important to help you conceive.

HERBAL MEDICINE

Herbal medicine is widely used for many conditions in Internal medicine, Gynecology and Pediatrics. There are over ten thousand herbs documented in the materia medica, published by the Ministry of Health of China. Majority of these herbs are from plant source and have been found through years of experimentation and usage to be effective for specific conditions. Chinese herbs are usually used in combination of 8 to 20 herbs and are customarily prescribed for an individual patient’s specific condition. The herbs can be dispensed to a patient in many forms. Raw herbs are mostly prescribed in infertility conditions and taken in a brewed tea form. This herb tea is stronger and quick acting. The herbs can also be prescribed in many other forms. Powder, capsule, pill, and tincture are some of the common forms. Herbal medicine can have a direct impact on your metabolic, endocrine and other systems, which may be contributing to your infertility.

Herbal medicine can nourish your reproductive system and give your body something it lacks. For some of the common problems, herbal medicine has a regulatory effect, lowing FSH levels and increasing progesterone levels. The herbal formula developed by Chinese physicians through the centuries help women enhance their reproductive potential by harmonizing the endocrine system, which regulates the menstrual cycle. Herbs contain natural energetic substances whose essence gently corrects underlying deficiencies or removes obstructions.

The effects of these herbs vary. They may act on the ovulatory phase; they may regulate the secretion of mucus; they may stimulate the uterus; or they may assist in the production of adequate progesterone. These reproductive tonifying herbs act more like a crutch than a cast. They support your reproductive system to do what it wants to do naturally - that is, to conceive.

WORKING WITH ASSISTED REPRODUCTIVE TECHNOLOGY

Traditional Chinese Medicine can be used solely or in conjunction with Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) and fertility drugs. Applying Traditional Chinese Medicine principles can help you prepare your body for an ART, support you physically and mentally during and after the procedure, and mitigate some of the difficult side effects caused by some of the medications.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has helped women embarking on ART procedures improve their chances for conceiving and carrying health children to term. Many women and men (male sub fertility conditions) use acupuncture & herbal medicine alone or in conjunction with their treatment. We are here to help and support you conceive and have a healthy child.

If you are scheduled to start with ART sooner, Acupuncture will help improve your chances by decreasing the body’s physiological reaction to stress, reducing the side effects of medications, and supporting your uterus for implantation. In these cases, using acupuncture garners more successful results than ART alone.

Chinese Medicine can help to improve the success rate of IVF in many ways:

  • Improve the function of the ovaries to produce better quality eggs
  • Regulate the hormones to produce more follicles
  • Increase blood flow to the uterus and increase the thickness of the uterine lining
  • Relax the patient and decrease their stress
  • Prevent the uterus from contracting
  • Decrease the side effects of fertility medications used in IVF
  • Strengthen the immune system
  • Decrease the risk of miscarriage

DIET AND LIFESTYLE

Proper nutrition and lifestyle are very important from the perspective of general health and reproductive health. Depending on the cause of infertility, a natural health diet and lifestyle are found to be very valuable. In many cases, the natural approach should be tried first before proceeding to drastic medical interventions, especially if you are in your twenties. The natural approach for infertility may include:

  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Exercising in moderation
  • Learning about the best time to conceive
  • Eliminating caffeine, nicotine and alcohol
  • Managing stress
  • Having regular quality sleep

ACUPUNCTURE IN PREGNANCY & CHILDBIRTH

Acupuncture is an ideal treatment in that it offers women drug-free relief from many problems that can arise during this particular time. Even for conditions like morning sickness, back pain, sciatica, fatigue, which are often considered as “par for the course,” acupuncture can not only relieve symptoms and improve a woman’s quality of life, but also prevent them from becoming serious enough to necessitate medical treatment.

Acupuncture, like any form of medicine, has precautions and contraindications. If performed properly and by adequately trained practitioners who have experience in treating pregnant women, acupuncture is a very safe procedure. There are virtually no potential complications or side effects, even in children and during pregnancy.

Pre-birth acupuncture can enhance an efficient labor, and the teaching of acupressure to a woman’s partner can make a big difference in the levels of pain experienced during labor. During labor itself, acupuncture can play a role in actively reducing the level of medical interventions such as inductions, forceps deliveries, and caesarean sections. Acupuncture can provide effective treatment for disorders such as pregnancy -induced hypertension and breech presentation and help induce labor, allowing women to achieve natural birth.

Giving birth is a wonderful and rewarding experience but it is also physically demanding. Acupuncture helps to replenish and balance your body during this period. If post partum symptoms persist or develop after the initial recovery period acupuncture is very effective in treating the following conditions:

Postpartum depression and anxiety, insomnia, postpartum fatigue, pain (backache or pain of the vaginal tissues ), insufficient lactation or excessive milk production, mastitis, and hemorrhoids.
